Height-adjustable Mouse for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Initial Design Prototype

My initial prototype was a wrist-support system, not an actual mouse. I made the model using a 3D printer. By 3D printing the main structure using silicone, I attempted to make users feel comfortable when they put their wrist on the structure. Also, by implementing wheels on each side of the structure, I ensured that the structure moves smoothly on a flat surface. Although this prototype did allow users to freely move their arm when using a mouse, I started to question how effective this product would be. I wanted to design a wrist-supporting device that is attached to the mouse itself, thus enhance efficiency and effectiveness of the product.

Many computer users suffer from wrist pain called carpal tunnel syndrome due to compression of the median nerve as it passes through the wrist at the carpal tunnel. I am of the opinion that the best way to prevent the syndrome is through orthotherapy or by exercising one’s wrist as frequently as possible. To help busy workers exercise their wrist as they work, I created an ergonomic computer mouse. This height-adjustable mouse enables users to find the most comfortable wrist position for them, ultimately preventing wrist pressure and pain. The buttons and mouse wheel are made of metal, while the actual height-adjusting apparatus is made of malleable plastic. A white button underneath the mouse allows the user to either fix or adjust the height. In addition to being ergonomic, the mouse is also environmentally-friendly because it is made from recycled plastic bottles.
